• Who We Are

The Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center (NMCAC) has been serving Roscommon, Crawford, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Iosco, and Otsego counties since 2014. We offer specialized services for children and families affected by physical or sexual abuse, creating a safe and supportive environment for healing.

  • What We Do

NMCAC provides trauma-sensitive forensic interviews, advocacy, medical exams, mental health services, and prevention efforts. We work with law enforcement and CPS to ensure children are interviewed in a non-traumatizing, child-friendly setting. We offer therapeutic services, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and EMDR, free of charge. Our First Step Program provides sexual assault exams 24/7, ensuring confidential, trauma-informed care.

  • Why We Do What We Do

Our mission is to prevent further victimization of children while helping them heal from abuse. By working with various partners, we support investigations, prosecutions, and treatments that ensure safety, healing, and hope for a better future.

Building Campaign

In its first 10 years, the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center has supported over 3,400 children and families across six counties, providing free assistance to victims of child sexual abuse and neglect. As the need continues to grow, your financial support will help us expand our staff and facilities, ensuring that vulnerable children feel empowered and supported on their path to recovery. Your contribution will be key to ensuring these children are not left to suffer in silence, reminding them that there are caring individuals who believe in their resilience. Currently, the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center has two full-time therapists and two forensic interviewers, but only limited space with two therapy rooms and one interview room. Staff share office space, which compromises privacy. The addition of a second forensic interview room will help reduce wait times and expand mental health services. The Roscommon County Commissioners have generously donated a former juvenile center, which is being transformed into a trauma center, increasing our facility size from 3,713 to 13,466 square feet. This expansion will allow NMCAC to serve the growing demand for services and provide private offices for staff, ensuring confidential meetings with children and families.

Phase 1 is Underway!

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we’ve raised $802,000 of our $1.2 million goal for Phase 1 of our Building Campaign. This first phase is critical to expanding our space and services to better support children and families across Northern Michigan. Once Phase 1 is complete, we’ll begin Phase 2 as we work toward our overall campaign goal of $3.5 million. Every contribution brings us one step closer—thank you for your continued support!

Child abuse and neglect is a significant problem in big cities and small. The communities in the Roscommon area are so fortunate to have the high quality Children’s Assessment Center available to them. I grew up near Roscommon, went to school in what is now the CRAF Center back when these services did not exist, but were certainly needed. We spend our summers at Higgins Lake and former high school friends informed us of the effectiveness of the Assessment Center and asked us to help with the Building Campaign. We were happy to help and hope you will too!
